BPM Knowledge & Tips

Importance of BPM in DAWs

Setting the correct BPM (Tempo) in your DAW project is crucial for recording and mixing. If the tempo setting doesn't match the audio file, editing (copy-paste) becomes difficult, and time-based effects like Delay and Reverb may sound off.
We recommend measuring the BPM of any instrumental track before starting your project.

Classical Tempo Markings

Italian terms like "Allegro" or "Andante" on sheet music indicate the mood and speed. Here are their approximate BPM equivalents:

TermMeaningApprox. BPM
LargoBroadly, slowly40 - 60
AdagioSlowly, with expression66 - 76
AndanteAt a walking pace76 - 108
ModeratoModerately108 - 120
AllegroFast, quickly120 - 168
PrestoVery fast168 - 200

Common BPMs by Genre

Each music genre has a typical tempo range. Use this as a reference for production or DJing.

Hip Hop / Reggae85 - 100
Pop / Rock90 - 135
House / Disco120 - 130

Drum'n'Bass170 - 175

What is Double Time / Half Time?

Double Time means feeling the rhythm twice as fast. For example, a slow ballad at 70 BPM might be interpreted as 140 BPM depending on the drum pattern.
Half Time is the opposite, feeling the rhythm at half speed. Dubstep often has a drum pattern at 70 BPM but is produced at 140 BPM.
This tool displays "Maybe: Double Time / Half Time" to help with these interpretations.

Tempo Changes & Odd Time Signatures

This tool assumes a constant tempo throughout the track. It may not provide accurate results for:

- Songs with Tempo Changes: Tracks that speed up or slow down (e.g., Live recordings) may show an average value.
- Odd Time Signatures: Complex rhythms (like 5/4 or 7/8 time) might confuse the automatic detection algorithm. In these cases, please use the "Tap Mode".
