Lossless vs. Precise cut: which should you choose?

Many video formats store complete images called keyframes along with frames that depend on other frames. To cut without re-encoding, Lossless cut starts at the keyframe at or before your selected start time. Precise cut re-encodes the video so you can start at the frame you choose.

Lossless cut (default) Precise cut
Quality Original quality, no loss Slight quality loss; adjustable quality
Speed Usually fast; depends on file size and device speed Takes longer as clip length increases
Start position Starts at the previous keyframe Starts at your selected frame
HDR & portrait video Preserves HDR and orientation Converts to 8-bit SDR; exports the correct orientation
Lossless start Selected start (Precise cut)
K marks a keyframe. If you select frame 11, Lossless cut starts at the previous keyframe (frame 9), while Precise cut starts at frame 11. The tool shows the actual lossless start time before you export.

Common ways to use a video trimmer

Shorten videos before sending them

Keep just the moment you want to send in a text or group chat. A shorter clip is easier to share. To reduce the file size further, use the Video Compressor after trimming.

Create clips for social media

Pull out moments for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, or Stories. Check the current video requirements for your platform before posting.

Save highlights from long recordings

Extract highlights from livestreams, meeting recordings, lectures, or screen recordings. Lossless cut avoids re-encoding the whole clip, making it useful for long videos within the file size limits.

Trim the beginning and end

Remove camera shake, setup time, or dead air at either end of a recording. Move the start and end handles to keep only the part you need.

Frequently asked questions

Will trimming reduce my video quality?

Lossless cut copies the original video and audio without re-encoding, so there is no quality loss. Precise cut re-encodes the video as H.264, which may slightly reduce quality. You can choose High quality, Standard, or Smaller file in Precise cut mode.

Why does my trimmed video start a little earlier?

Lossless cut can only start at a keyframe without re-encoding. The tool shows the previous keyframe as the actual start time before you export. Choose Precise cut if you need the clip to start on a specific frame.

Can I trim videos on iPhone or Android and save them to Photos?

Yes. You can use this tool in your phone browser. If the Save to Photos / Share button appears after export, open it and choose Save Video or a similar option from the share sheet. Otherwise, use Download, then move the video from your Files app to your photo library.

What format will my trimmed iPhone MOV video use?

Most iPhone MOV videos with H.264 or HEVC video are saved as MP4 in Lossless cut mode. The video and audio are copied without changing their quality. MOV files with formats that cannot go in MP4, such as ProRes video or PCM audio, stay in MOV format. Precise cut exports MP4.

Can I split a video or remove a section from the middle?

Each export saves one continuous clip between the start and end times. To split a video into multiple clips, click Trim another clip after exporting, choose a new range, and export again. Removing a middle section and joining the remaining parts is not currently supported.

Are my videos uploaded to a server?

No. Your video is opened, trimmed, and exported on your own device. The video file is never sent to a server. Closing the page clears the loaded video and the exported result from the tool.

Can I remove recording dates and location data?

Yes. Turn on Remove recording date & location before exporting to remove file metadata such as the recording date and GPS location. This option is off by default. Enable it when needed, such as before sharing a video on social media.

What are the file size and video length limits?

You can open videos up to 2 GB on desktop or 1 GB on mobile. Lossless cut can export long clips quickly, but the selected clip must be approximately 1 GB or less on desktop, or 300 MB or less on mobile. Precise cut is limited to 10 minutes on desktop and 3 minutes on mobile. Select a shorter range or use Lossless cut if you exceed these limits.

Can I trim portrait and HDR videos?

Yes. Lossless cut preserves portrait orientation and HDR data, including Dolby Vision and HLG. Precise cut exports the correct orientation, but converts HDR to 8-bit SDR, which may change the colors.

Can I trim WebM, MKV, or AVI files?

This tool accepts MP4, MOV, and M4V files. For other formats, use the Video Converter to convert your video to MP4 first.

How do I trim audio or remove sound from a video?

Use the MP3 Cutter to trim audio files. To export a video without sound, turn on Remove audio on this page before exporting.
